In Fafe, straw braiding is more than a technique: it is a form of knowledge passed down through generations, connected to the land, to skilled hands and to the memory of a community.
It was from this heritage, and within the framework of the Experimentar o Têxtil programme, that “aBRAÇAr na trança da palha” was born — an initiative by the Municipality of Fafe in partnership with the Contextile Biennial. Dedicated to the traditional straw braiding of Fafe, the exhibition brought together tradition and contemporary creation, revealing a craft that continues to reinvent itself without losing its connection to its roots.
Featuring works by Ana Leandro, António Jorge and Mónica Faria, the exhibition explored the relationships between straw, the landscape, artisans and the community, while also highlighting the work undertaken towards the recognition of this traditional craft as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).
Building on the works created by António Jorge during an artistic residency for that exhibition, together with other works produced subsequently, a new selection has now been brought together, once again through Contextile and the Municipality of Fafe, challenging new forms, languages and futures for Fafe straw.
Free admission.
