A Portuguese story that crossed the Atlantic
Founded in 1924 in the heart of Lisbon, Joalharia do Carmo has always been part of the city’s cosmopolitan life. More than a century later, it remains at the same address, with the same identity, recognized by Lisbon City Council as a Loja com História (Shop with History).
On its facade, an ornate, crowned golden heart, characteristic of the spirit of the time, would foreshadow what was to become the brand’s defining focus: filigree. In the year before its centenary, Joalharia do Carmo made an unprecedented decision: it stopped selling any piece that was not certified filigree, dedicating itself exclusively to this Portuguese art through both traditional and contemporary designs.
But this story began to reach beyond Portugal in 1986, when The New York Times discovered filigree at Joalharia do Carmo in Lisbon and introduced it to its readers. Forty years later, in 2026, Joalharia do Carmo crossed the Atlantic, opening its first store outside Portugal in Times Square, New York.
The wire is still Portuguese. So are the hands that work it. But the story now reaches a new part of the world.
Filigree as intangible cultural heritage
Since 2023, filigree has been included in Portugal’s National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. What is recognized and protected is not only the jewelry itself, but also the knowledge needed to create it.
This expertise is passed down through generations, encompassing gestures, techniques, and knowledge that take years to master. Goldsmiths construct the frame; the enchedeiras, the artisans who fill it, work with wires that can be as fine as a human hair. Every piece is made entirely by hand.
The true heritage lies in the hands of the makers. Without the artisans, gold would remain gold and silver would remain silver. Their knowledge is what transforms the material into filigree.
That is its intangible heritage: what cannot be seen in the jewelry, but without which none of it could exist.
The future is in the hands
Sustainability begins with the hands of the makers. Valuing artisans and paying them fairly helps secure a future for the skills, crafts, and heritage that are part of Portuguese identity. In an increasingly technological world, what only hands can do becomes rarer and more precious.
Portuguese gold
For thousands of years, one metal has crossed civilizations as a measure of value, power, beauty, and memory: gold.
Traditional Portuguese gold has a fineness of 800 parts per thousand, equivalent to 19.2 karats. This means that 800 of every thousand parts of the alloy are gold, giving the jewelry the warm hue so characteristic of Portuguese gold.
Its authenticity is attested by the hallmark applied to the jewelry by the Portuguese Assay Office, an official service of Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda (the Portuguese Mint and Official Printing Office), which certifies the precious metal and its legal fineness through an official system of testing and assurance.
At Joalharia do Carmo, all gold jewelry is made from Portuguese 19.2-karat gold. In the artisans’ hands, the metal is drawn into wires that can be as fine as 0.22 mm in diameter. At this almost invisible scale, one of the most delicate expressions of Portuguese jewelry making emerges: gold becomes wire, wire becomes filigree, and filigree becomes heritage.
Certification
What could be rarer than a piece of jewelry whose origins can be proven?
The beauty of a piece of jewelry lies in what can be seen. But its true value also lies in what is known about it: who made it, how it was made, and the tradition it carries.
Certification identifies jewelry made according to the techniques, materials, and characteristics set out in the filigree specification, guaranteeing the authenticity of a craft with a distinctive place in the history of Portuguese jewelry making.
Exceptionally fine precious-metal wires are twisted, flattened, and worked by the artisans’ hands to create the characteristic patterns of Portuguese filigree.
Certification protects this knowledge, recognizes those who keep it alive, and makes it possible to trace the origin of each piece. In doing so, it preserves craftsmanship without restricting creativity: filigree continues to evolve in the hands of its makers, an art that endures across centuries as each generation finds a way to carry it forward.
UniqueMark® digital certificate
Joalharia do Carmo was a pioneer in the pilot project for the UniqueMark® Digital Certificate, developed by the Assay Office of Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda to bring precious-metal certification into the digital age.
Individually linked to each piece of jewelry, the certificate can be accessed through the Assay Office’s official app, providing a record of its certification process, from precious-metal testing to hallmarking.
This technology strengthens the authenticity and traceability of each piece, using innovation to support an assurance system with centuries of history.
Filigrana Design Competition
Creativity against the clock
On March 28, 2026, Rua das Flores in Porto hosted the Filigrana Design Competition, a creative challenge inviting participants to design a filigree jewel in a single day, inspired by the world of Alice in Wonderland- the same inspiration behind the design of Joalharia do Carmo’s Porto store.
A jury assessed the projects for creativity, originality, and production feasibility, seeking new interpretations of one of the most delicate forms of Portuguese jewelry making. Alongside a cash prize, the winning designer received the opportunity to have the piece produced and sold in Joalharia do Carmo stores.
The event brought the filigree tradition together with a new creative generation, challenged to imagine its future while preserving the essence of expertise passed down through generations.
