In Óbidos, the Kings Day is celebrated with a violin concert in an unexpected… library!

The literary village has a new secret. And it is so Portuguese!

Marking the end of the Christmas season, Óbidos rescued tradition with a concert offered by Casa Portuguesa do Pastel de Bacalhau. After Lisbon, Porto, Gaia, Aveiro and Cascais, the brand arrived in the medieval town in December 2022, in a store with bibliographical inspiration and a truly Portuguese flavour.

With the presence of many guests, the Town Councilor for Culture of the Municipality of Óbidos, Margarida Reis, and the President of Tourism of the Centre of Portugal, Pedro Machado, praised the challenge that this new store is to “affirm Óbidos in the circuit of the future, making the region more attractive and contributing to qualify the experience of those who visit this historical town, while increasing the quality of life of the local inhabitants”.

Kings’ Day was marked by the sound of violin strings that echoed through the streets on themes as varied as Viva la Vida, by Coldplay, Prelude – Suite Gulliver, by G. Telemann or Amar pelos dois, by Salvador Sobral, among many others, offering a free concert to all those who visited the store.

A Portuguese experience adorned with colour, books, music and a unique delicacy

Part of the Unesco Creative Cities of Literature network since 2015, Óbidos maintains its romanticism among walled streets and books – many books! – which are now joined by violins, contributing to culture that can now be heard everywhere in the town.

Codfish Cake with PDO Serra da Estrela cheese filling is king in this new store, paired by the nobility of a Ginja from Óbidos (cherry liqueur) or a white Port wine. But the experience goes beyond the delicacy: there are more than a thousand books lined up on a bookshelf at the entrance of the red-aged Casa Portuguesa do Pastel de Bacalhau. On the ceiling, there is a tribute to the shepherds of Serra da Estrela Mountain, reminding us of the origin of one of the oldest and most prodigious cheeses in the world, which here joins the traditional codfish cake.

Free violin concerts throughout the year

Stimulating creativity, violin music offers a privileged perspective on the world interpreted through memories. Classical music, yes, but also unexpected themes for the strings of this instrument: Abba, Queen, Beatles, Coldplay, Bilie Eilish, Mission Impossible or Indiana Jones are some of the hitsthat Casa Portuguesa do Pastel de Bacalhau in Óbidos offers all year long, every day.

About Casa Portuguesa do Pastel de Bacalhau

Under the motto “It is the voice of the land yearning for the sea”, from the poem D. Dinis by Fernando Pessoa, and paying tribute to the shepherds of Serra da Estrela, the very first Casa Portuguesa do Pastel de Bacalhau opened in 2015 on Rua Augusta, Lisbon, to celebrate two icons of Portuguese gastronomy: the Codfish Cake and the PDO Serra da Estrela Cheese.

Staying loyal to its concept, there are now twelve stores of the brand: in Lisbon, in Rua Augusta, St. George’s Castle, the Beer Museum, Terreiro Paço, Santa Justa Elevator, Cais do Sodré and Portas de Santo Antão, Cascais, Aveiro, Porto near Torre dos Clérigos and in Gaia, in an emblematic store that adds, to this gastronomic experience, a live concert on a historic pipe organ, recently restored for this purpose and dated from the second half of the 19th century and now in Óbidos.

Casa Portuguesa do Pastel de Bacalhau is a brand of the Value of Time Group.
